JESUS QUOTES SCRIPTURE OUT OF CONTEXT, OMITS SOME OF IT, AND ADDS SOME OF HIS OWN.. WHAT A REBEL!!

Steve Harmon

Here is Isaiah 61:1-2 (NIV)

"The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,"

Here is Luke 4:18-19 (NIV)

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor."

As you can see here, Jesus put His own rendition on Isaiah 61.. This scripture passage was Jesus' mission statement to the world. This is what Jesus was here to do, besides the obvious of atoning for the world's sin. And as it was his mission, it was passed on to us, until He returns. "As the Father has sent me, I am sending you" - John 20:21.

The thing that strikes me the most are two aspects of this. One, we see Jesus add the verse, "and recovery of sight for the blind", which meant he came to physically heal, not just emotional healing. The other thing is that Jesus stops in mid verse of verse 2 and doesn't quote, "and the day of vengeance of our God". The reason why He didn't quote that was because it was not what He came to do. He came on earth to do everything that He quoted in Luke. It's also what we as the body of Christ are supposed to do. We are "to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor", rather than proclaim "the day of vengeance of our God".

We are living in a time of favor. God is in the business of reconciliation. We as the church are to promote that. There will be a day of judgment, but it's not now. Right now, we live in Day's of grace. If you don't know what you are supposed to do on this earth as a follower of Jesus, again, read Luke 4:18-19.. That's the role you have to your brothers and sisters all around the world who don't know their father yet.. YOU are the light of the world. YOU are the salt of the earth. YOU change the atmosphere when you walk in the room because you bring hope, not just to a person's eternity, but to their present broken state. What lives in you can change their whole world as they know it.. That's why the Spirit of the Lord is upon YOU, and in YOU.
